He gained widespread fame in 2018 with the release of the documentary film Free Solo, which captured his successful attempt to become the first person to free solo Yosemite National Park’s El Capitan rock formation. Honnold is the younger of two children born to Dierdre Wolownick and Charles Honnold, both community-college teachers.
