  Ewha Womans University, private institution of higher learning in Seoul. It was one of Asia’s earliest institutions dedicated to women’s higher education. Located in the Seodaemun district of Seoul, it remains one of South Korea’s most prestigious universities and a significant institution in the global landscape of women’s education. As of 2021, total enrollment was about 21,000. Ewha was founded in 1886 by Mary F. Scranton, an American missionary of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and Christian values remain a core aspect of Ewha’s educational philosophy.
