She became the first Asian woman to win a gold medal in the event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which were held in 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2012 Liu participated in the Asian Junior Championships in Colombo, Sri Lanka, where she finished with the gold medal after a throw of 53.02 meters (173 feet 11 2/5 inches).
