Buchwald (born 1955, Bloomington, Indiana, U.S.) is an American chemist known for his work in organic synthesis. Buchwald received a bachelor’s degree from Brown University in 1977, and a doctorate in chemistry from Harvard University in 1982. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology before he joined the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as an assistant professor in 1984. He became a full professor in 1993. Buchwald’s advances in organic synthesis came from extending the work of American chemist Richard F. Heck and Japanese chemists Negishi Ei-ichi and Suzuki Akira.
